Now don’t get me wrong, I still take Nurofen when I have a headache. But I’ve learnt that sometimes tablets aren’t the best and most helpful option for keeping us healthy. In recent years, I’ve discovered that alternative medicine is often more effective and better for your body. Not only that, but taking care of yourself is not only important for physical health, but mental health too. With the current strain on the NHS, the common sense and information required to self medicate is more important than ever in keeping unnecessary pressure off of our hospitals, A&E and GP services.
One example I swear by is chamomile tea with honey. Chamomile is a grassy tea with a weak taste that can help cure a sore throat and helps you sleep better. I combine this with normal honey for flavour and it’s remidic properties, and if I’m really ill I go with Manuka honey. This type of honey is more expensive but is already used as alternative medicine due to it being filled with vitamins and minerals to help fight any illness. I once had a mild throat infection and managed to clear it drinking chamomile with Manuka honey and ice cold water one after the other all day. It was gone within a day or so, and avoided a trip to the doctors (where people often catch more illnesses, and is already hard to get to) and meant I didn’t need antibiotics. I highly recommend looking into different types of herbal teas and their benefits, such as peppermint, red, ginger and green teas. These are really good to have on hand when you or a friend is a bit under the weather. And lets be honest, us Brits find tea always makes things better.
I suffer from really bad spots and acne, and my mum has been begging me to go on antibiotics to clear it. As much as I think they would help, personally I'd rather stay away from antibiotics if I can. Because of this, I've gotten really into my skincare. I love finding new products that help my skin, as you can read all about in the skincare section of my blog. One specific brand I will mention here is Liz Earle. They do ranges for different skin types, rather than overall, and are so skin friendly its unreal. Liz Earle has always been a staple part of my skincare, from its cleanse and polish face wash, toner and moisturiser (the classics), I really cannot find a fault with this brand and I use at least one of their products daily. The importance of finding a good skincare routine that works for you and following it regularly can't be put into words, so acne sufferers, I encourage you to do so. Combine this with lots of water and a healthy diet and I promise you’ll see results like never before, while avoiding proper medication.
And finally, vitamin supplements. Now it should be noted that these should not, under any circumstances be used as a replacement for meals, as that is simply not a healthy way to live. While this is technically medication, what it does do is prevent you from getting illnesses as often, and gives your body the strength to fight it better. I use Basset’s Childrens vitamin gummies, as I love the taste and they help keep your immune system strong, and when I have an illness I use Feroglobin, a liquid that has iron, folic acid, vitamin B12, and helps the formation of red blood cells.
Final note: when seriously ill, always consult a doctor. These little tips are meant more for general afflictions and as an encouragement to keep your body and mind healthy at all times, especially during the current Covid-19 pandemic. Looking after yourself physically can make you feel better mentally, so its a win-win.
stay safe and healthy out there,
love,
